How do you do good as a family?
We shop locally almost 85% of the time, including books, groceries, and odds and ends. We dine small locally almost always. Even though it’s expensive, the kids know it’s part of giving back to our community and helping keep small shops open, we are really passionate about this. We help clean up the local gardens when we can, and in general I donate to ACLU and Planned Parenthood on a monthly bases, as well as a few Go Fund Me’s whenever I can, which the kids almost always know about. We have set up two successful lemonade stands benefiting RAICES, and when we purge and cleanse we donate it to our local Goodwill, because I know so many families depend on that place to dress their kids and buy new things.

We involve our children in our family’s decisions with respect to charitable giving and are constantly having a dialogue with them around the importance of giving back. With the older children, we have participated in feeding homeless and nutritionally insecure New Yorkers. In the fall, we will begin working as a family with Edible Schoolyard.

One of my favorite examples – we set up a small table outside of our apartment on the sidewalk and sold paintings that the kids had made. All of the proceeds went to a fabulous charity called Good+Foundation, which provides goods (diapers, wipes, clothing, etc.) to low income families with children.
