Thanksgiving is one of Team FEED's favorite times of year. It's a time to come together, host a Friendsgiving FEED Supper, cook, shop, and give thanks. Although there is such an emphasis on giving thanks, amid all the Black Friday sales, pre-Christmas hooplah and warm, fuzzy, family time, it is easy to forget how many of our neighbors and friends are in need.
The reality is, an estimated 47 million Americans are food insecure – meaning, they are not sure where their next meal will come from, including their Thanksgiving meal. With such an incredible, loyal, base of conscious consumers, we knew we could help out a bit during this time. For 48 hours, we provided a full Thanksgiving meal with every single FEED purchase, in addition to our regular school meal donations, in support of The Bowery Mission.
We were blown away by your response during this 2 day period. Thanks to your purchases, the FEED community provided hundreds of Thanksgiving meals to Americans in need, through the Bowery Mission, contributing to the 8,000+ meals that were served on Thanksgiving day.
We could not have done this without you, of course, but we'd also like to shine a spotlight on The Bowery Mission, whom we worked with to provide these meals.
The Bowery Mission The Bowery Mission has served homeless and hungry New Yorkers since 1879. Last year, The Bowery Mission provided more than 505,000 meals to men, women and children, 97,300 nights of shelter and 56,200 articles of clothing, as well as showers, haircuts, and expert medical and optometric care. Each meal and every night of shelter is an invitation to residential recovery programs, where men and women get a second chance and lives are transformed from hopelessness to hope.
Says Bowery: Thanksgiving is the busiest time of year for The Bowery Mission. Last year, with the help of over 650 volunteers, we served approximately 8,000 meals on Thanksgiving Day alone. Additional meals and food parcels were distributed in Tompkins Square Park throughout the week, as well as to more than a dozen partners in all five boroughs. Thanksgiving at The Bowery Mission requires 730 turkeys; 3,500 pounds of mashed potatoes; 2,700 pounds of sweet potatoes; 2,000 pounds of stuffing; 1,500 pounds of vegetables and 1,200 pounds of gravy. We also distribute practical care kits containing winter and hygiene items such as hats, socks, gloves, soap and toothbrushes to those who come for a Thanksgiving meal. In addition, we distribute 1,800 new coats and each child receives a new toy.
